Ok, threads debating Michael's "true personality" are taking up much of this board, and there are arguments and stories back and forth saying "he's a completely kind-hearted, sweet guy" or "NO, he's a total jerk!" or "NO, he loves kids" or "NO, he wears his medals around to get laid!"

I've read through all of the recent threads in this debate, and there's a pretty obvious pattern to all the stories. Here's what's really going on. All the ones declaring that he's completely nice are from fan points of view, or places where the media is watching. All of the jerk stories are passed along the grapevine in his college or hometown. The truth is, both these sources have their biases.

For interviews and in front of fans, no one is stupid enough to be a jerk when your the world or his fanbase is watching. They've probably trained him to be a super nice saint to the media and fans. He probably doesn't say alot of the super caring and nice stuff sincerely. As for the grapevine jerk stories, many stories passed down are true, but usually only the negative ones get passed. Did you know, on average, a person tells three people of a product they liked and eleven people of a product they disliked? Obviously, all the grapevine hears is Michael's jerk moments.

The truth is, he's human. He's probably on the cocky side. Probably not one of those super nice, will-help-anyone, care about everyone type of guys. (Not many are) He's probably ultra-competitive, and even takes things personally, but he has to be to get the motivation to train and win. All those gold medals aren't won with an "I care about everyone" attitude. And no one has zero ego. And you need that to not let "Greatest Olympian of All Time" get to your head. While he's not "completely kindhearted to everyone" as some claim, he is, like the rest of us, devoted and loving to his family and close ones. There is no way his mother and sister can be driven to tears by his accomplishments is he were a "total jerk."

Though, if you're a fan, don't expect him to be super nice and caring (and mean it). He probably doesn't care much about anyone he doesn't know. And there are some things he definitely needs to work on not doing (like DUI), but he's got his good side. So...

Acts like a jock? Probably. Using his gold medals to get laid? Uh... I don't think you'll see this happening in a club:

Hot girl: Hey.
Michael: LOOK, a gold medal! Wanna sleep with me?"

If he ever wants to get laid, it probably goes like this.

Michael: Hey, wanna-
Hot girl: OMG MICHAEL PHELPS! Sleep with you?! YES!

This could be said about anyone famous for that matter.
